The posture of the figure turning to his left and the narrowness of the panel indicates that the icon is one of a series constituting an Extended Deesis. In the centre would be the Enthroned Christ in Majesty attended by The Mother of God and Saint John the Baptist and six further holy persons (archangels, warrior saints, monks and bishops) extending outward on each side.

Although not identified by an inscription the saint is recognisable from his relatively youthful face and short beard. The common identity of Bartholomew and Nathaniel is established in theological discussion and gospel commentaries.
