Saint Nicholas, one of the most popular saints in Russia, is here shown in half-length dressed in the vestments of an Orthodox bishop and wearing a mitre. He blesses with his right hand and holds a gold-encased Gospel in his left. His hand is covered by his garment, an ancient symbol of reverence. On the reverse are fragments of an image of St George and the Dragon

This is a pectoral object and was probably originally worn by a bishop, similar to items in the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. For example, an oval icon of St Metrophans of Voronezh (fig. a), which - though in a less accomplished style to our version - is the same size as our object and also dates to the 19th century.
