St Nicholas stands in half-length dressed in the traditional robes of an Orthodox bishop. He blesses the viewer with his right hand, and holds a Gospel book in his left. To the right of his head (our left), a miniature figure of Christ can be seen in a cloud (representing heavenly space) blessing St Nicholas. Directly opposite (to the left of St Nicholas), the Mother of God, also in a cloud, gestures towards the saint, directing our attention to him.
