Icons of a Guardian Angel are somewhat rare but appeared in Russia in the 19th century. In this example the angel is surrounded by Saint George, the famous warrior-saint, and Saint Anastasia of Sirmium, the fourth century Christian martyr. Beneath the Guardian Angel are billowing clouds signifying the angel's celestial stature. Clouds can also be seen above the angel, where Christ is shown blessing from paradise. These clouds create a verticality to the image and further centralises the angel.

The style of our icon suggests an association with Iosif Pankryshev, who ran a workshop in Mstera in the late 19th century. Features of this style are skilful, precise, graphic brushwork, dramatically glowing faces and a highly decorative manner of depicting clothing. Mstera workshops are well-known for their ornate lacquered boxes. A similar work by Pankryshev of a Guardian Angel with saints can be seen in the State Museum of the History of Religion in St Petersburg (fig. a), while another icon attributed to his workshop also shares similarities with our icon.
