St Nicholas is shown in half-length, wearing the classical vestments of a bishop. His right hand blesses the viewer and he holds a gospel book in his left. His garment covers his left-hand as he holds the book - an ancient symbol of reverence. His eyes look to the side signifying that he is in a state of deep contemplation. Two roundels - containing Christ in the left (blessing Nicholas) and the Mother of God in the right (holding her veil) – are seen either side of St Nicholas. These spheres, combined with the circular shape of St Nicholas' halo, produce a symmetrical pattern that acts to create a geometric stasis, a reflection of cosmic order. Even though this is a classical iconographic design associated with icons of St Nicholas, the artist of this version has developed this design with a powerful intensity, imparting a concentrated, hypnotic atmosphere to the object. The geometric feature is complemented by a warm, luminous glow that radiates from the face of St Nicholas.
