Christ is shown in half-length gazing directly at the viewer. His right hand is raised in the classical gesture meaning oration or 'teaching'. His left hand holds an open Gospel with an inscription from Matthew: 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn' (11:28-30).

A similar icon painted in the same region was exhibited at the Temple Gallery in Summer 2003 (fig. a).
