The Virgin is shown in half-length holding the Christ-child in her left arm. Her right hand holds Christ's left hand, while he blesses her with his right hand. As Jesus looks lovingly at his mother, she gazes at the viewer.

This iconography which has existed from the early Byzantine period is known in Eastern Christianity as the Eleusa typology, meaning 'tenderness'. It shows a human and gentle relationship between the Mother and the Son.
