In the upper part of the icon Christ is shown at the top of a mountain with a blue aureole. Behind Christ three pink rays emanate downward. He is clothed in white garments (cf. e.g. Matt. 17:2) and flanked by two Old Testament prophets: Elijah (on our left) and Moses (on our right). In the lower part of the icon beneath the glorified Christ are three disciples (Peter, James, and John) who are in positions of prostrated worship (Peter) and astonishment at the event that throws them to the ground.

The scene is based on the New Testament texts describing the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor (Matt. 17:1-9; Mark 9: 2-9; 1-9; and Luke 9:28-36).
