The left panel shows a Guardian Angel in full-length and with head slightly motioned towards the side. The angel is dressed in white vestments and holds a sword in her left hand. In her right hand she holds a white cross of martyrdom. The angel is offering the cross to the figure on the opposite panel – St Catherine of Alexandria, an early martyr of the Church. St Catherine is also depicted in full-length and is dressed in royal vestments, including a crown. As she turns towards the angel, she is also raising her hands in gestures that signify both reverence and acceptance as well as knowledge.

The rich, warm colours, attention to detail, and decorative features are characteristic of Russian icons from the 18th century, as is the theme of the guardian angel.
