The original icon was painted by St. Piotr, the first Metropolitan of Moscow, around 1306 when he was still the Father Superior in Volyn (Fig. a). The icon was presented to Metropolitan Maxim. Though the subject remains rare it did become an established type as our example demonstrates.[1]

The Perovskaya may also relate to the Pimenovskaya type (Fig. b). Indeed the two are often conflated.
