Saint George and the Dragon, circa 1800
Inscription: Άγιος Γεώργιος, Saint George
Feast Day 23rd April
This attractively painted popular icon follows ancient tradition and expresses the historic myth.
George's cult in Christianity is first documented in 323, though no reliable evidence concerning his existence has ever been accepted by scholars. Of all the military saints he was the most frequently represented throughout Byzantium, first as a standing Roman warrior and, after the 10th century, on horseback. Indeed, one writer notes that George was 'an essential feature of every church programme, and appears in every other possible medium as well, from painted icons to ivories...'. The depiction of him slaying the dragon is the most common iconography, and is one of the most popular icons.
