The Annunciation, 17th century
Egg tempera, gold and gesso on wood.
Inscription: Ευαγγελισμός Evangelismós
Feast Day: 25th of March
Possibly north-west Greece or Albania. Monastic workshop painter basically following late Byzantine tradition where we see the Archangel and Mary before stylised non-realistic architecture. A lunette in the upper part represents the divine world from which rays of light descend towards the Virgin. The predominant colours, dark blue, dark green and bright red are found in Macedonia and surrounding regions. The lilies in the hand of the Archangel and in the vase, and the book in the hand of the Virgin are details borrowed from western medieval tradition, but the style is wholly Greek. The painter avoids Renaissance naturalism which characterised icon painting of the Cretan School which dominated the Venetian market in the post-Byzantine period and pervaded much of the Balkans. His conservatism must therefore be a conscious decision, adhering to the purely symbolic and abstract Byzantine vision of the divine realm.
